Develop a Logo

A logo usually consists of a symbol and words that could be easily recognized by all, but one that stands for and summarizes your most compelling attributes. There are also crowdsourcing sites for this and you may just be surprised what one of them may develop for you for a cost less than $1,000… maybe a lot less. This could be one of the best investments you’ll ever make as it will allow you to stand out from the crowd, be remembered positively and give you an aura of someone who’s interesting, innovative and definitely worth getting to know better.

Publish Quality Content

I’m more of a quality than a quantity guy but posting blogs frequently on your website will not only get your message out to the audience you wish to impress but you’ll hone your skill set the more frequently you do publish and it will have the extra benefit of helping your site rank higher.

And developing a blog that has worthwhile content (that’s the quality attribute I just mentioned) will make excellent kindling for creating a hot group of followers for tweets and retweets.

Build a Following

First, seek out the people you admire, can learn from and those with whom your association with will enhance your own image and stature.

Then, build your own reputation by participating frequently with “Like,” “Share,” and “Comment” on others’ content until you develop a style and following of your own. Oftentimes you can achieve this fairly easily by offering a fresh perspective or add new information to an established audience.

Example: let’s say you’re interested in sales career, a ubiquitous and common profession employing millions of people. How can you make yourself stand out from the ten million or so other professional salespeople?

First, ask yourself what do all these people have in common regardless of what they are selling? What are their common concerns? What tools do they depend on and what software could they employ to make their lives easier, more efficient, generate more prospects, close a greater percentage of those prospects, increase order size and frequency or establish a greater sense of trust, dependability and loyalty from their customers?

There are lots of consultants telling them how to do this so these people have already developed an audience. What you need to do is get active with these leaders and use their audience to establish something they will find interesting, unique, beneficial, easy to understand and simple to implement and preferably something whose benefit is achievable in the short term.

Think Local 

Newton’s Law of Universal Gravity states that gravitational force is proportional to the masses of the objects and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. This same equation could be applied to you. The farther away you are from your target market, the less engaged it will be and the less engaged the more expensive and time consuming it will be to convert prospects into supporters.

You can do this by participating in and sharing local events, discussing and recommending local businesses, commenting on news articles written by local authors or just writing and filming interesting sights, attractions, restaurants and entertainment venues in your own home town.

As you get more involved in these situations, your own network will begin to develop and grow and you’ll start to see an increase in the number of times you appear on Google and Bing’s search pages. Hey, you’re now well on your way to gaining your 15 minutes of fame… now it’s up to you to extend the time and reason for people to remain interested in following you.

Just remember, this is not some short-term project or quick fix for an immediate problem. This is your life,.. make sure you’re in it for the long run. If you have a problem now, this will be a very powerful countermeasure, if you don’t, it will marginalize the problem should one arise.

If you’re one of the lucky ones who totally escapes unwarranted attacks, it will still be worth the effort whenever and wherever you’re seeking a job, negotiating a deal, applying for a loan, joining a limited membership, establishing a group where you seek recognition and the list goes on and on. And, believe it or not, it will even help in your private relationships because people just can’t help being curious and wanting to know everything about everyone they deal with… so why not give them the story you want to read.

There are probably a number of very good companies and professionals that could help you plan your campaign, post your content and promote your reputation. Like any business or service, there are different levels of quality, personal service and price. This article is not an attempt to promote one over the other. I have not made any attempt to do that. I’ll leave that task to others.

I can only discuss my experience in this area and the company I was fortunate to find and the people I’ve worked with who truly cared about my situation. They were confident they could help, proved competent in their approach and were committed to my success and concerned for my future. I could also add another “c” in discussing their fees and say they were “cheap” but that would demean their service when in fact they are a total class act and I’m one happy and totally satisfied client (even though the “cost” was reasonable).
